Building A Legacy

Building A Legacy

Allergist

ALLERGIST
(After the Allergist appt @ the Grange Fair)

Yesterday I took Brayden too the Allergist. I was told that the appointment could take up to three hours! Oy! We met the doctor and started talking about family history. Up until a few weeks ago- I thought our family history was not much to think of- a few allergies to the season changes- but not much more than that.... well, I was wrong! My dad as a baby was allergic to almost everything environmental and food- so it didn't surprise me after hearing this to know that my little guy was probably following his grandfather's footsteps. After discussing the issues we've been having- he decided to run a total of 16 pricks (two sets of 8). They had me undress Brayden and then hold him with his back up. They prepared me that he was going to scream. As they counted to three and pricked him he was cooing. I wish you could have heard him sing through the pricks to his back! Never even noticed it!! We decided later on- that he probably has just been overwhelmed with itchiness for so long now that he never even noticed.

Anyway- 10 minutes later and some large welts and rashes later- I was informed that Brayden was allergic to milk, eggs, and chicken! (chicken was introduced 1st) and also cats with a sensitivity to dogs. Thankfully the other bigs ones like soy and wheat came back negative!! Also- the doctor informed me that most likely- the food allergies Brayden would outgrow- so that was encouraging.

I feel unbelievably good and calm about this news. A weight has been lifted off my shoulders just knowing what to stay away from. We see him again in a month. As for now- I am using a food diary as I introduce new foods and just watching for eczema patches to inflate as my guide to know what foods to stop and try later. He also prescribed a great cream for Brayden's eczema outbreaks and an anti-itch medicine to be taken before bed.

Today- GI Series... stay tuned!

A Day in the Life of a Two Year Old

A Day in the Life
of a
Two Year Old

(Ava Grace, Brayden Timothy, & Ruthie Mackenzie)

It all begins with nap-time- every two year olds favorite time of the day. Especially when it comes to Ava and Ruthie. Especially, lately.

Blair Drake was watching Ruthie while Kathryn and I were with Brayden in Danville getting his endoscopy. Blair decided to try and put Ruthie down 1st and then Ava 2nd.

Ava decides to help Blair put Ruthie to bed

(Ruthie in her cot.  Ava at her side. )

Ava: "Ok, Ruthie. Sleepy time now."
(Ava asks Blair to leave, so he backs off to watch from the door)
Ava strokes Ruthie's hair
Ava: "I sing Twinkle, Twinkle Ruthie?"

Ruthie: nods silently.
(Ava can't finish the song so Ruthie helps her)

After the song, Ava gets serious and says, "You may not go outside, you understand?"

Ruthie nods silently.

Ava kisses Ruthie's forehead and says, "Goodnight sweetheart", and both Ava & Blair leave the room.

Endoscopy

Endoscopy

I have the greatest friends a girl could ask for. Yesterday, August 19th- Brayden was scheduled for his endoscopy and colonoscopy. August 19th also happened to be Jon's orientation at Penn State AND my parents last day of vacation. My girl Kathryn (I can now say this) pregnant and having a rough 1st trimester agreed to come along with me as my support and her husband Blair watched Ruthie along with Ava from 9:30-4:00!! I am sooo blessed and just wanted to start with a big thank you to Kathryn and Blair for being there for me yesterday- I couldn't have gotten through the day without you
Brayden's Endoscopy- the trip down to Danville was quite fun. I reminded myself of my dad, trying to go through red lights and getting lost with the hospital in sight. We had to arrive an hour before the procedure and of course, Danville hosptial is 10x's bigger then Mount Nittany and I forgot the one little piece of paper with directions on where to go once arriving. Whoops! So- we took the long way to finally find the Endoscopy Room in the hospital. We checked in, ate our lunch (quickly) and sat! Sat for an hour. I'm not quite sure why we had to arrive a whole hour before a procedure- but, we did. At 1:00pm the nurse came and got us and we went back into the exam room. Brayden weighed 14 lbs 6 oz (a whole pound from his 6 month appointment). He got his little ankle bracelet and we moved into the procedure room. There, Dr. Babonis met us and after some questions, decided to only do the endoscopy (the blood in his stool has disappeared since I quit nursing- aka... I'm not bleeding and he's not taking in blood) (doctor still is convinced I could not have been bleeding enough to cause him to have blood in his stool) Anyway, he said the procedure takes about 10 minutes and during the procedure he'd take a few biopsies and once finished, I could come in right away and feed him (he hadn't had anything to eat/drink since 6:30 am) Kathryn and I left the procedure room and went to sit down. I jumped up and went and made his bottle so I could have it ready for him. When I sat back down, the nurse walked out to say we could go in- that Brayden was finished. :) Brayden did great. I quickly had him in my arms and was feeding him his bottle. The doctor was there and told us that everything looked great and he'd let us know how the biopsies come back. Also- I need to make an appointment for Brayden to have a GI Series to test his reflux. So- that's where we are! I'm so relieved to have this over and done with. Thank you all for your prayers.

Family Vacation: Brayden's 1st!

Family Vacation

We are incredibly blessed to be able to travel down to New Bern, North Carolina and vacation with Jon's parents. This year was an extra special year as Opa was finishing his last few weeks of sabbatical and the house was full with family including Nathaniel and Heather and Miles, Gillian, Hilary. Great Uncle Andrew, Jeckin, Judah, & Fania were also in town visiting. FULL HOUSE!

Richmond- We traveled down after Jon's last day of camp and began our vacation in Richmond visiting Andrew & Kristen for two days. We loved seeing their new house and hanging out with them. Ruthie warmed up quickly and fell in love with Uncle Andrew's drums!

Of course, while visiting, we had to pull out the cards and play some Old 13 after the kiddos went to bed! Classic!!

New Bern- We then traveled down to New Bern, NC to start the 2nd part of our vacation. When we arrived, we had the house to ourselves. We had a few days of catching up on some rest and visiting with Gaga and Opa before the rest of the family joined us. Once everyone arrived, we had what Ruthie referred to as a Slumber Party as the four of us shared a room. I knew no matter what, it would work out just fine, but my kids blew my expectations out of the water!! Ruthie slept great even when Brayden woke up to eat. I couldn't have planned it to go any better! Ruthie slept in her little cot, Brayden in his pack-n-play, and Jon and I in the double bed! Wow! Let me just take this time to say, MY KIDS ROCK!!!!  This also began the end to Ruthie's naps! I don't even think we were home during nap-time the entire time the entire family was visiting, but even if we were, I think Ruthie would have had a hard time settling down enough to fall asleep!

Day 1- The first day we made it a beach day! We were all so excited to get Miles and Ruthie to the beach and watch them play in the water and sand. (if you remember back to Thanksgiving, the kids LOVED the beach and came home soaked after playing in freezing cold water) To all of our surprise, Miles was terrified of the sand, wouldn't touch it and Ruthie was terrified of the water! Man! We had a great time hanging out under the big tent, building sand castles, looking for seashells, and playing in the water. By the time we all got home, we were exhausted. Let's just say, we all got more sun then we anticipated. (Even Brayden who stayed under the tent)

(Brayden's 1st Trip to the ocean)

Day 2- After an exhausting day at the beach, we decided to take it easy on Day #2. Some of us went downtown New Bern to the Fire Station Museum. Miles and Ruthie loved looking at all the firetrucks. Afterward, we took a walk downtown stopping at the Birth Place of Pepsi where Ruthie and Miles tried their first sips of Pepsi. Miles LOVED it- Ruthie, not so much. We then went to Cow Cafe for lunch. Ruthie remembered instantly about the playroom in the back, but Miles didn't remember until Ruthie ran back after lunch. While the kiddos played, the adults enjoyed some very yummy icecream. The afternoon, some of us went to the pool and then shared a relaxing evening at home.

Day 3- This was a day trip to Beaufort, a beautiful town along the water. Our plan was to maybe take a boat ride and walk around the town enjoying the little shops. It was a beautiful HOT day and so it didn't take us long to decide that after lunch at the Dock House to realize we were not going to want to stay out in the sun long... so instead, after some shopping we went to the Aquarium! I've wanted to go to the aquarium since my 1st time in New Bern, NC- so I was very excited. It was a great time had by all exploring all the beautiful water creatures! Ruthie and I even touched a Sting Ray! Much fun!

Day 4- we decided to try again at the beach. Miles got some awesome beach shoes that had him running around the sand without a care in the world. Ruthie got close to the water, but decided to leave the swimming up to mommy and daddy. That evening, we celebrated Gillian's birthday.

 (Beach Babes)
(Cousins)

Everyone left the following morning and we got ready for my parents visit. It was so nice for them to stop by and say a quick hello, eat some yummy food (and drop off the portable dvd player I had ordered specifically for this trip) We had a pretty laid back day after my parents left. Ruthie took her 2nd nap on vacation as did her momma and Gaga. For dinner, we went to a fabulous pizza restaurant that left us all full but still hungry enough for cookies when we got home!

More to come as we finish our fabulous vacation ... we'll break up the post so that it's not any longer than it already is long ... Thanks for reading!

6 Months

6 Months
Soooooooo BIG

Before leaving for our vacation to New Bern, NC, I took Brayden in for his 6 months doctor appointment. I wasn't too shocked to see that he was 13 lbs 6.1 oz (2%) and 2'1" (11%). Right above the teal curve he's clung to from 6 weeks old. I talked to the doctor about some of my concerns (not using his feet to hold himself up being one of the major ones) and the doctor put my mind at ease. Besides his tininess, he is excelling in all other areas. And let me just state for the record, you're not going to meet a happier baby.

At the end of his doctors appointment, he had two shots in his poor little legs. I was amazed as he cried, stopped, and then learned to fake cry to get my attention again. It was so sweet and I was happy to pick him back up and cuddle him some more.
6 Months- I eat chicken (yum!) I eat apples (yum!!!) I eat bananas (hmmm?) and Green Beans (yum!)
I eat all my food with some oatmeal which I love. I may be having a reaction to chicken, so I'm going to take it easy on that for a while and then reintroduce it again. (I got a bad rash!)
I drink 6 oz of formula every time I wake up which equals about 5-6 bottles a day. (I am growing!)
I am always aware of where mommy is and if someone else is holding me and mommy walks into the room, I fuss to get her attention (it works like a charm!) I am rolling over from front to back and back to front with ease. Loving time on the blanket to explore and play with toys (if I'm lucky enough to have toys, Ruthie loves the toys too!) I am almost sitting on my own- I am very very strong!
